Francona on Big Show: Jenks activated, Michael Bowden optioned; both John Lackey and Darnell McDonald starting rehab in Pawtucket tonight
In Darnell McDonald's absence, the Red Sox' only real backup outfielder has been Mike Cameron, which would be fine except Cameron hasn't hit at all. So the Sox might find McDonald useful as an occasional fill-in for both J.D. Drew and Carl Crawford, both of whom a) bat left-handed, and b) haven't batted well this spring.
John Lackey, you know about. He makes a lot of money, and only so much can be expected of Tim Wakefield and Alfredo Aceves, who (granted) have both pitched well since joining the rotation after Lackey and Diasuke Matsuzaka went on the DL.
Bowden, the onetime starting prospect who’s been shifted to full-time relief duties, won’t exactly be missed as he’s gotten into just one game for the big club since coming up. Meanwhile, Jenks racked up a 9.35 ERA in 11 games before hitting the DL with ERA-itis. But Jenks is obviously healthy now, having pitched two whole innings with Pawtucket and walked only one enemy batsman.
