Alfonso Soriano Injury: Quad Strain Puts Cubs Outfielder On Disabled List

Chicago Cubs outfielder Alfonso Soriano hurt his leg yesterday trying to beat out an infield grounder. While it was expected to be a day-to-day injury, there was an idea that Soriano might miss a little more time when Tyler Colvin was spotted skulking around Wrigley Field. The Cubs made the move official, putting Soriano on the 15-day disabled list today and activating Colvin.

If there’s good news, it’s that the injury still doesn’t seem too severe. From Carrie Muskat of MLB.com:

Soriano not expected to need full 15 days but the #Cubs don’t want to go too long a man short

With Marlon Byrd also on the DL after getting hit in the face with a pitch, and Reed Johnson and Jeff Baker also getting hurt this week, the Cubs are really, really thin in the outfield. Kosuke Fukudome will stick in right, the speedy Tony Campana will play in center, and left field will be manned by some rotation of Lou Montanez and Colvin, though Blake DeWitt has also received a start there.

Soriano started the season hot, hitting 10 home runs in April, but he only hit two for the month of May. His combination of a sub-.300 on-base percentage and a slugging percentage over .500 would put him in pretty rare company if he were to keep it up. Colvin floundered in 62 at-bats with the Cubs this season, and when replacing a low-OBP/high-power guy like Soriano, Colvin is a pretty good facsimile.
