In the past week, the Iowa State backfield has been diminished by a significant fraction on the younger end, thanks to the diligence of local police: Following Duran Hollis’ suspension over a controlled substance arrest, the university’s announced rising freshman tailback DeVondrick Nealy will be cooling his heels indefinitely in Paul Rhoads’ doghouse. His reason, however, is infinitely more entertaining:
Iowa State Running Back Arrested (No, Another One)
An officer was summoned to the corner of Stange Road and Pammel Drive at 2:39 a.m. because a group was carrying a weapon and shooting things on campus, according to a police report.
Nealy was told to get and stay on the ground by an officer, but when the officer went to assist a fellow policeman Nealy got up and started walking north on Stange. A BB gun was found on Nealy.
Nealy spurned offers from over a dozen other high-profile programs, including Auburn, Stanford, Michigan, and Arkansas, to head to Ames. He and Hollis were the latest hopes for bolstering a Cyclones ground game that ranked 72nd nationally last season in rushing offense. And in case you were wondering how Iowa State fans are taking all this, well, they’ve only got themselves to blame. Jinx!
