Ken Shamrock Vs. James Toney In MMA Bout Set For September

According to multiple reports, UFC Hall of Fame inductee Ken Shamrock is set to face boxer James Toney in a mixed martial arts-rules match on September 23rd in El Paso, Texas. There is no word yet on which promotion will carry the event. BJPenn.com was the first to report the news. BoxingScene.com later confirmed the news.

Since 2000, Shamrock has lost 10 of his last 14 MMA fights. During that span he fought five times in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, only winning once, a first-round knockout over Kimo Leopoldo at UFC 48. He most recently lost to journeyman Mike Bourke by TKO (injury) in November of 2010. He is currently 47 years old.

Toney has only one MMA fight to his combat sports career, a first-round submission loss to UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture at UFC 118 in August of 2010. While long past his prime, Toney's boxing career is storied. He was a former WBO heavyweight champion, IBF middleweight and super middleweight champion, as well as the holder of several other titles. He is currently 42 years of age.

Toney’s trainer, Trever Sherman, told MMAFighting the bout between Shamrock and Toney could take place in Texas, Nevada or California. However, given the age of both competitors, damage incurred during their career as well as damage they could incur at this juncture in their career plus the lack of meaningful competitiveness to the bout, it is highly unlikely this bout will be sanctioned in more rigorous commissions like Nevada or California.
