The New York Mets racked up 20 hits in a wild 16-9 victory over the Detroit Tigers Wednesday. In the process, they broke a team record for runs scored over four consecutive games, with 52.
Mets Vs. Tigers: New York Continues Amazing Offense Outburst With 16-9 Win
The Mets had no home runs among those 20 hits, but they scored four runs in the first inning (thanks in part to a three-run triple by Scott Hairston) and never looked back, also putting up crooked numbers in the fifth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings. Ronny Paulino and Angel Pagan each had four hits, and five other Mets (Jose Reyes, Justin Turner, Carlos Beltran, Daniel Murphy, and Ruben Tejada) had two. Jason Bay, meanwhile, reached base five times, going 1-for-2 with four walks.
It was a tough night for the Tigers, who were blown out despite recording five home runs, including two by Miguel Cabrera. Starting pitcher Phil Coke allowed eight runs, seven earned, over four innings. After that, Ryan Perry got through 2.1 innings with only one run allowed, but the Mets got to Al Alburquerque and David Purcey, who coughed up seven runs between them, and the Tigers finished out the top of the ninth with utilityman Don Kelly on the mound. (Kelly got Hairston to fly out.)
It's been a wild week for the Mets offense. Before Wednesday's 16-run outburst, Mets hitters racked up 14 runs in another blowout of the Tigers on Tuesday. Before that, they scored eight runs against the Texas Rangers on Sunday and 14 on Saturday.
