Mike Cameron Designated For Assignment By Boston Red Sox

Mike Cameron and the Boston Red Sox may be about to part ways. Cameron was designated for assignment by the Red Sox early Thursday, and they have 10 days to trade or release him.

Cameron was one of the Red Sox’s major free agent signings of the 2009 offseason. He inked a two-year, $15.5 million deal and was regarded as a player who would bring an excellent glove and some decent offense to the Boston outfield.

That wasn’t quite what happened in Boston. Cameron posted a triple-slash line of .259/.328/.401 in 2010, and managed just four homers and 15 RBI in an injury-plagued campaign that saw him make just 180 plate appearances. And he was significantly worse in 2011, batting .149 and posting an equally woeful .212 on-base percentage.

Cameron’s roster spot will be taken by utility man Yamaico Navarro, coming up from triple-A Pawtucket.
