Juniors often return for their senior season to improve an area of their game.
Consistency holding back North Carolina’s Dwight Jones
For North Carolina senior wide receiver Dwight Jones, it’s consistency. Jones, rated as the 91st best player eligible for the NFL Draft by MtD, possesses a lot of great tools.
At 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, he has size just as good or better than anyone from this year’s draft. Against Florida State last year, Jones had eight receptions for 233 yards. Jones also took apart a talented Virginia secondary with seven receptions for 198 yards and two touchdowns.
The trouble for Jones is that he runs extremely hot and cold. Against Clemson, LSU and Georgia Tech, he combined for five receptions for 26 yards. 2010 was the first season where Jones was UNC’s top receiving option, so it’s understandable why he’d be inconsistent.
For now, though, that inconsistency is what keeps Jones behind other receivers.
“I have to keep my focus every time I’m on the field,” Jones told Fox Sports Carolinas. “Whether running a route where I know I will get the ball or not, I need to put it in 100 percent at all times. If I do that and if I do a better job holding onto the ball, I can help us a lot.”
Jones would also be helping himself a lot. Right now, he's behind Rutgers' Mohamed Sanu, Alabama's Marquis Maze, Stanford's Chris Owusu, Ohio State's DeVier Posey, Arizona's Juron Criner, Arkansas' Greg Childs, Notre Dame's Michael Floyd, Texas A&M's Jeff Fuller, Oklahoma State's Justin Blackmon and South Carolina's Alshon Jeffery.
Jones is probably more talented than half of those players, so if he can be more consistent, he should see his draft standing improve dramatically.
