Courtney Upshaw
6'2, 265 pounds | Outside linebacker | Alabama
First word: In Alabama's pro-style set, Upshaw was used both standing up and with his hand down last season. Versatility is one of Upshaw's biggest strengths. Against Aburn, for instance, Upshaw lined up on the weak and strong side, was used to spy Cam Newton option plays and with his hand down. Upshaw excels at taking on and shedding blockers. Was a starter for the first time in 2010 and a key reserve in previous seasons. For his career, he has 89 tackles, 18.5 tackles for los and eight sacks. Started 11 of 13 games in 2010 and only came off the bench due to an ankle sprain.

Notes:
• Has NFL-ready strength and the power to take on linemen alone and succeed. Uses his hands really well.
• Upshaw doesn’t have the best athleticism or straight-line speed, but he plays with a lot of effort.
• Is at his best when lined up near the line of scrimmage instead of out wide.
• Alabama likes to line Upshaw at end in four-man, nickel sets.
• As a pass rusher, Upshaw gets most of his pressure standing up cutting around the corner.
• Shows a strong rip move to work to the inside. Is better, though, using a bull rush.
• Is a fundamentally sound tackler who uses good technique and has long arms. Sinks his hips and fires through the ball carrier.
• Doesn’t have loose hips and will struggle in pass coverage, especially in man situations.
• Is still developing following his first season as a starter. Really came on during his final two games of the 2010 season.
