Shahid Afridi Immature, Unwilling To Listen To Others: Waqar Younis

In a damning tour report of Pakistan’s tour of the West Indies, the coach Waqar Younis has castigated the former captain Shahid Afridi, calling him immature and unwilling to absorb others’ opinion. Waqar has also said that Afridi usually lacked a gameplan and took decisions on the spur of the moment which proved to be detrimental to the team’s performances in general.

This report comes out at the back of ongoing feud between Afridi and the Pakistan Cricket Board, which has escalated into a national affair. Afridi had been dropped from the ODI captaincy and in retaliation, he quit international cricket. The PCB responded to this and his subsequent press conference with a decision to rollback his contract and subsequently, revoked the NOC that they had given the all-rounder to play for Hampshire in the English t20 tournament.

The board had earlier claimed that they had solid reasons to axe Afridi from the captaincy and it had been speculated that the worsening relationship between the captain and the coach was one of the reason.

Interestingly, there was another tour report that was made by the manager, Intikhab Alam, that called Waqar arrogant but did not absolve Afridi. Alam claimed in his report: highly hyper-active personality who lacks the temperament to listen to other people's point of views or look for solutions for the betterment of the team. This was in line with what Waqar had also mentioned in his report.

Pakistan had won the first three ODIs of the series against West Indies but lost the remaining two after it was revealed that Afridi and Waqar had not seen eye to eye on many an issue. Waqar confirmed that Afridi had stormed out of a meeting with him during the tour.

Later in the day, it was revealed that the Sindh High Court had stayed the disciplinary proceedings that the Pakistan Cricket Board had decided to begin against Afridi. The High Court also summoned the PCB and the sports ministry to appear before the High Court.
