British Open 2011: Rory McIlroy The Favorite, Tiger Woods Unlikely To Play

The 2011 British Open will take place at Royal St. Georges Golf Club in Sandwich, Kent, England from July 14 to 17. Louis Oosthuizen, who won the open championship last year, will attempt to defend his title.

It currently appears very unlikely that we’ll see Tiger Woods, who hasn’t taken a shot in about seven weeks. Most eyes will turn instead to Rory McIlroy, the 22-year-old who won the U.S. Open. McIlroy is currently on a break, but will return in time to play:

McIlroy has pulled out of the French Open, which starts in Paris on June 30, and will not play again until the British Open at Sandwich, southeast England, from July 14-17.

After the celebrations, McIlroy intends to relax with his family following his first major victory -- an eight-shot win at Congressional on Sunday.

After his runaway performance at the U.S. Open, McIlroy is currently the favorite at the British Open as well, at 6:1, followed by Lee Westwood at 10:1 and Woods and Luke McDonald at 15:1.

“I’m going to take three weeks off, I think, get myself ready for the Open Championship,” McIlroy said after shooting four straight rounds in the 60s to win the US Open.

“I want to give myself a great chance to prepare well for that and hopefully give myself a good chance to win.”

A focused McIlroy could be tough to beat, given the way he’s played recently.
