Andy Roddick And Team USA Sent Packing From Davis Cup By Spain

Brothers Bob and Mike Bryan put in a great performance for the United States in their 2011 Davis Cup quarterfinal matchup against Spain, but their win was the only one team USA could manage. Andy Roddick, Mardy Fish and company couldn’t do enough to prevent their team’s exit from the competition, as Spain won the quarterfinal 3-1 in front of a pro-United States crowd in Texas.

The Bryan Brothers defeated Marcel Granolliers and Fernando Verdasco to force the singles match between Fish and David Ferrer, but when Ferrer prevailed, the singles match between Roddick and Feliciano Lopez was abandoned with Spain having already taken and insurmountable lead. The match between Ferrer and Fish was an exhausting four hour, 11 minute affair which Ferrer, the world’s No. 6 ranked player, won 7-5 7 6 (7-3) 5-7 7-6 (7-5).

Spain will now move on to face France in the semifinals of the competition, after they defeated Germany. Argentina and Serbia, featuring world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, are the other two teams remaining in the competition.
