Stanford basketball coach Johnny Dawkins has agreed to a two-year contract extension through the 2015-16 season, the Associated Press reports.
Stanford Basketball Coach Johnny Dawkins Signs Two-Year contract Extension Through 2016
Dawkins began coaching for the Cardinal in April 2008, and his first few seasons weren’t easy ones - he went 20-14 in 2008-09, but then went 14-18 in 2009-10, and had a 15-16 record in 2010-11. The Cardinal has struggled against Pac-10 competition throughout that time.
Dawkins is just now beginning to get his own recruits in place, however. He had two freshmen, Anthony Brown and Dwight Powell, hold their own in 2010-11, and there is hope that they can form the core of a strong Stanford team.
The new contract should also make it easier for Dawkins to sell his program to recruits, the Mercury News notes, since he’ll be able to promise that he’ll be at Stanford throughout their careers.
Dawkins was briefly connected with the University of Maryland head coaching job in May.
