New York Red Bulls Sign Frank Rost As Third Designated Player

For all of the issues that the New York Red Bulls have had this season with their goalkeepers Greg Sutton and Bouna Coundoul, help is on the way. The club announced today that they have signed German keeper Frank Rost. The 38-yard-old will count as the club's third Designated Player.

Rost has plenty of experience in the German Bundesliga, having made 426 top-flight appearances since 1992 with three clubs: Werder Bremen, Schalke 04 and most recently Hamburger SV.

“Frank is a very experienced goalkeeper who will provide a strong presence in-between the posts for our club during our quest for a MLS title,” said Red Bulls General Manager and Sporting Director Erik Soler. “We are thrilled that he has decided to join us in the middle of our campaign and look forward to his contributions for the remainder of the season.”

Signing Rost as a DP shows that the Red Bulls were concerned over their goalkeeping issues this season. The team had leaked in 24 goals, enough to cause concern for folks that believed this would be a MLS Cup contender this season.

New York was able to free up some salary cap space recently when the club dealt Dwayne De Rosario to DC United for Dax McCarty. It was clear with that move that the club was going to make a fairly large signing with the open cap space.
