St. Louis Blues Sign Jonathan Cheechoo To One-Year Deal

Once known as a cornerstone to the San Jose Sharks franchise, Jonathan Cheechoo has fallen a long way, as he has recently signed a one-year deal with the St. Louis Blues. The signing is most likely meant for Cheechoo to play with the Blues AHL affiliate in Peoria.

Cheechoo scored 56 goals in the 2005-06 season for the San Jose Sharks and won the Rocket Richard trophy for being the league's leading scorer that season. His production has tailed off from there over the last four seasons though as he ended up apart of the Dany Heatley deal back in 2009 and played 61 games for the Senators before he was released after the season ended.

For the 2010-11 season, Cheechoo ended up with the Worcester Sharks of the AHL where he had 18 goals and 47 points in 51 games for the San Jose Sharks affiliate.

Blues General Manager Doug Armstrong had this to say about the signing:

“It’s a good opportunity for him,” Armstrong said. “He gives us some depth, some protection, and if anyone slips here, you don’t know. You bring a former 50-goal scorer into camp and see where he’s at.”

Whether Cheechoo can regain the scoring ability he showed in six seasons ago remains to be seen. At this point though, the signing is a low risk one for the Blues and gives them some good veteran presence for their AHL affiliate.
