First the NFL Lockout, and now this. Former Green Bay Packers running back Darrell Thompson is filing a class-action suit against the league for using the identities of retired players to promote the league, while not paying the retired players.
Darrell Thompson Sues NFL Over Use Of Retired Players’ Images
“For years, Defendant (the NFL) has earned substantial revenue by making promotional films and selling products featuring the identities of retired NFL football players,” Thompson said in the lawsuit, which was filed Wednesday in U.S. federal court in Minnesota.
Thompson is seeking an injunction against the NFL, and is also seeking damages.
The news comes as a group of retired players have issued a complaint that parties in the NFL Lockout are reducing pension payments to retired players “in order to maximize the salaries and benefits to current NFL players.”
It will be interesting to see how serious Thompson’s suit turns out to be. Thompson was the Packers’ first-round pick in 1990, then played five mediocre seasons and was done by 1994. It’s hard to believe the NFL offices contain any evil advertising execs who are scheming to find ways to exploit images of Darrell Thompson’s stellar career.
