Rookie Depth Chart Battles: Austin Pettis

More and more NFL rookies are expected to contribute early in their careers. However, for them to make an impact they need to beat out a veteran player. We are going to analyze the situation of specific rookies and determine the likely hood of them winning a position battle.

Player: Austin Pettis

Team: St. Louis Rams

Position: Wide Receiver

Competition: Danario Alexander, Danny Amendola, Donnie Avery, Mark Clayton (FA), Brandon Gibson, Mardy Gilyard, Laurent Robinson, Greg Salas

Chance of winning the battle: 40 percent

Thoughts: Pettis joins a crowded but unspectacular group of receivers in St. Louis. This unit lacks a true #1 target and possibly even a legitimate #2 guy. Each player has a specific trait they are good at but none are well rounded or a consistent threat.

The addition of Pettis doesn’t solve the Rams problems as he lacks the top end speed to be a consistent deep threat. However, he may be the best possession receiver on the roster. He has a good frame and is able to block out defenders with his body. The biggest factor determining whether or not he receives major playing time is his ability to gain separation.

The St. Louis wide receiver competition will be very interesting to watch. Everyone has a legitimate chance of emerging as a starter it will all depend on camp performances.
