More and more NFL rookies are expected to contribute early in their careers. However, for them to make an impact they need to beat out a veteran player. We are going to analyze the situation of specific rookies and determine the likely hood of them winning a position battle.
Rookie Depth Chart Battles: DeMarco Murray
Player: DeMarco Murray
Team: Dallas Cowboys
Position: Running Back
Competition: Marion Barber, Felix Jones, Tashard Choice
Chance of winning the battle: 20 percent
Thoughts: Many NFL draft analysts were scratching their heads when the Cowboys selected DeMarco Murray. Dallas had a lot of needs but the running back position was not one. They had a hard time finding enough snaps and carries for the players currently on the roster. There has been talk about Marion Barber not returning to the team but in my opinion it still doesn’t open up carries for Murray.
Murray has good straight line speed but his high running style limits his ability to break tackles. It would be tough to predict Murray being very successful gaining the tough yards in the middle of the defense. His biggest contribution will come in the passing game where he is a dynamic pass catcher. Murray will also likely be utilized as a kick returner where he has game breaking ability.
Overall, Murray has a lot of the same skills as Felix Jones whom he will be battling for carries. The one thing that might help Murray get on the field is Jones’ durability concerns. However, Murray doesn’t appear to be anything more than a situational player.
