Stump Godfrey Transferring From New Mexico Football

University of New Mexico quarterback Stump Godfrey has been granted his release from the university. Late Tuesday the 19-year-old made it clear that he intends to transfer to a different university in order to pursue a starting role.

The decision came on the heels of Monday’s announcement that Godfrey asked Lobos’ head coach Mike Locksley to name him as the starter or grant him his release. Locksley was unable to do the former, and thus the release was given per Godfrey’s wishes. The only provision to the agreement is that the Texas native cannot transfer to any school on New Mexico’s schedule through 2015, including all teams within the Mountain West Conference.

Locksley issued this statement following the announcement.

“Stump and I have met,” said head coach Mike Locksley, “and we appreciate what Stump did for this program, and we wish him well as he moves on”

Godfrey played in seven games for New Mexico last season, starting the last four, including an early November matchup against Wyoming that brought the Lobos their only win of the season. He threw for 553 yards and five touchdowns throughout the year, while throwing three interceptions. Godfrey was also the third leading rusher on the team, amassing 287 yards and four touchdowns.
