On the Clock is going to be a new series of articles that examines players that are knocking on the door of being labeled a bust. Basically, these players are on the clock and its time to act because time is running out for them to capitalize on their potential.
On the Clock: Leodis McKelvin

Draft History: 2008 NFL Draft, No. 11 overall
Thoughts: McKelvin was one of the fastest players in the 2008 NFL Draft and that speed led to an equally fast rise up the draft board. McKelvin is a very good athlete and had as much potential as any player in the draft. He was the first of five first round cornerbacks selected in 2008. However, he has yet to live up to expectations and is “on the clock.”
The Bills fell in love with McKelvin's athletic ability and added special teams value. They felt that despite being a bit raw, McKelvin would develop into a top-tier cornerback. During his rookie season, McKelvin started 6 games while appearing in all 16 games. He compiled two of his four career interceptions in a Week 12 game against the Chiefs. However, after his rookie season his career took a downward turn. The next season he was injured and missed the majority of the season. Last season he struggled to keep receivers in front of him and keep the ball out of their hands.
While still possessing good speed and athleticism, McKelvin has struggled to develop his coverage skills. He may not be in danger of loosing his roster spot but he has not lived up to his first-round selection. McKelvin will be facing some tough competition this season as the Bills used a second-round pick on Texas corner Aaron Williams. McKelvin is on the clock because a first-round selection that is not a starter could definitely be labeled a bust.
