The Old New Inefficiency

How have the Pirates, who lost 105 games last season, vaulted to the top of the standings in late July? The great Joe Sheehan offers an explanation:

↵Pirates Defensive Efficiency 2010: 0.689

↵Pirates Defensive Efficiency 2011: 0.718

↵That’s a jump from last in the league to third (and in a virtual tie for 2nd place with the Giants), which goes a long way towards explaining their 28-point bounce (to the good) in batting average allowed.
