Doug Free Agrees To Four-Year Deal With Dallas Cowboys, According To Report

Adam Schefter reports that the Dallas Cowboys have agreed to terms with offensive lineman Doug Free on a four-year deal. It turns out Free is conspicuously expensive, and will reportedly make an average of $8 million over the life of the deal with the Cowboys.

Dallas reached agreement on a four-year, $32 million deal that included $17 million in guaranteed money with OT Doug Free.

After being drafted in the fourth round in 2007 and playing for a relative pittance in 2007 through 2010, this is a huge payday for Free. So huge, in fact, that you might say that it’s great to be Free. (And that’s enough bad puns for today.)

Free stepped in at left tackle in 2010 after Flozell Adams departed for the Pittsburgh Steelers and played brilliantly, emerging as one of the NFL's better offensive tackles. Dallas News points out that the timing of his emergence was perfect, from his perspective - just as he was about to hit free agency, he became a player who was hard for the Cowboys to live without.

Earlier this offseason, the Cowboys had described keeping Free as their "No. 1 priority," so it's no surprise to see them hand him a big extension. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were also reportedly very interested in Free.
