Barry Cofield, Washington Redskins Agree To Deal, According To Report

After weeks of rumors connecting the two parties, defensive lineman Barry Cofield has agreed to a deal with the Washington Redskins.

Denver’s Fox 31 Sports reporter Josina Anderson first reported the agreement, which won’t be official until Friday. The contract will be for a six-year deal that will pay him $12.5 million in guaranteed money, according 106.7 The Fan’s Grant Paulsen.

It looks like Cofield will be the Redskins' new starting nose tackle, as he'll make the transition from a 4-3 scheme to a 3-4. If that's the case, he would displace Ma'ake Kemoeatu.

Cofield was a starter for the Giants from 2006 through 2010. He registered 54 tackles and four sacks in 2010.

For more on the Washington Redskins, check out Hogs Haven, particularly this post from a couple weeks ago, which addresses the possibility of a Cofield signing. In it, Ed Valentine of Big Blue View argues that Cofield lacks the size to be a good nose tackle in a 3-4 scheme. Valentine raises the possibility that Cofield could move to end, but that would be surprising, given that he hasn’t done that before.
