Welcome everyone to one of our new features for the NFL season, our Glaring Team Needs series! Every week we are going to pick three teams at random and briefly look for any holes we can find in their roster. This is a great time to start looking as teams have been using this week to grab as many UDFA they can while courting other teams FA. Lets take a look at our first group: The Seahawks, Vikings, and Falcons.
Glaring NFL Team Needs
1. Seattle Seahawks - Biggest Need: QB: Really just trying to get this one out of the way now because it will be a major topic for the team throughout the season. Currently Charlie (Clipboard Jesus) Whitehurst and Tarvaris (Jump Pass) Jackson are the Seahawks QBs. No one believes these two are the QB long term. Even with newly acquired Sidney Rice and Big Mike Williams on the outsides and John Carlson over the middle, the season long prospects for the Seahawks with the Whitehurst/Jackson QB combo aren't great. Luckily for Seattle fans, the 2012 quarterback class looks very top heavy. 2012 Draft Pick: Andrew Luck, QB Stanford. Many believe they will go after Barkely, but I think he stays in school.
2. Minnesota Vikings - Biggest Need: DB: The Vikings have a lot of needs. They just drafted their QBOTF in Christian Ponder and the O-line needs to be upgraded to protect him. They just lost Sidney Rice, so they could use a #1 WR for him to throw to. However, there could be one position that needs more help than either of those, the secondary. Antoine Winfield is the best pass defender they have (and can play for them til he falls apart as far as I'm concerned), but he is getting up in age and everyone behind him has question marks. Both Cedric Griffin and Chris Cook are coming back from multiple knee surgeries, Asher Allen is a liability in size and coverage, and Brandon Burton is a rookie. The safety position is even more lack luster. There is some young talent at safety, but they haven't gotten much production out of the position since Darren Sharper left. 2012 Draft Pick: Alfonzo Dennard, CB Nebraska. Got a chance to watch a lot of Nebraska games last season and Dennard impressed more often than Prince IMO.
3. Atlanta Falcons - Biggest Need: DE Now that the rookie wage scale has been completed, Atlanta's big trade up for Julio Jones looks better. In a division built on offense, the Falcons will be one of the most dangerous ones. While the offense is trending up, the defense needs to be bolstered. No position more so than DE. They have a great pair currently in John Abraham and Kory Biermann, but Abraham is getting older and there have been question raised wondering if Biermann can be the man without Abraham drawing attention. There are still FA DEs the Falcons could sign (i.e. Ray Edwards), but as it looks now they could use a top talent behind them. Recent late round picks in Lawrence Sidbury and Cliff Matthews are developing, but far from sure things. 2012 Draft Pick: Andre Branch, DE Clemson Don't think Atlanta falls apart and is in position for a guy like Quinton Coples, but Branch could be a player available late in the 1st.
