After just over five years as the manager of the United States men's national soccer team, the United States soccer federation has announced that Bob Bradley has been fired and will no longer be the manager of the USMNT. Bradley took over the job from Bruce Arena in January of 2007 and lead the USA to a Round of 16 appearance in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, a victory in the 2007 Gold Cup, and runner-up finishes in the 2009 and 2011 Gold Cups.
Bob Bradley Fired As United States Men’s National Team Coach
Bradley's popularity with fans has swung up and down like a see-saw with his various fantastic and disappointing results during his tenure. The two Gold Cup final losses, the World Cup loss to Ghana, a loss to Panama in the most recent Gold Cup, and a bad performance in a 3-1 loss to Costa Rica in 2010 World Cup qualification were particular lowlights. However, Bradley also guided the team to a win over Mexico in the 2007 Gold Cup final, multiple other home wins against Mexico, a win over Spain in the Confederations Cup, and a win away in Honduras to qualify the team for the World Cup.
During his tenure as the manager of the United States men’s national team, Bradley compiled a 43-25-12 record. U.S. soccer federation president Sunil Gulati announced the news at the press conference, where he had some kind words to say about Bradley.
“We want to thank Bob Bradley for his service and dedication to U.S. Soccer during the past five years,” said Gulati. “During his time as the head coach of our Men’s National Team he led the team to a number of accomplishments, but we felt now was the right time for us to make a change. It is always hard to make these decisions, especially when it involves someone we respect as much as Bob. We wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
Speculation about a potential new manager for the team is already rampant, with former candidate Jurgen Klinsmann and a number of MLS managers believed to be in the running.
