NFL teams now have the opportunity to begin signing their draft picks. This year is very different than previous years because of the tight time frame and new rookie salary cap structure. All teams will have opened up camp by this weekend and any missing rookies will be at a disadvantage. Normally by this time of the year the rookies would have gone through a rookie training camp and OTAs. However, due to the lockout these rookies will be meeting with their teams for the first time.
2011 NFL Draft Rookie Signings
The rookie contracts look a lot different then years past with less money involved. However, it appears that the majority of the contracts are being completely guaranteed. This is an interesting development as it could likely mean players hang on with their original team longer than usual. This will really impact players not living up to their potential.
Here is a breakdown of the 1st round picks that have signed: Von Miller, Marcell Dareus, AJ Green, Julio Jones, Aldon Smith, Jake Locker, Tyron Smith, Blaine Gabbert, Nick Fairley, Ryan Kerrigan, Adrian Clayborn, James Carpenter, Jimmy Smith. Cam Newton has yet to sign but is very very close and the deal could be finalized today.
