MLB Trade Deadline: Brewers Trade For Jerry Hairston, Jr.

The Milwaukee Brewers were already down a shortstop this season when Yuniesky Betancourt was placed on the Yuniesky Betancourt list after being Yuniesky Betancourt. Then they lost All-Star second baseman Rickie Weeks to a severe ankle sprain, and suddenly their middle-infield depth was severely limited.

The Brewers already swung a minor deal to acquire Felipe Lopez for depth, and now they've added utility player Jerry Hairston, Jr. via a trade with the Washington Nationals. The Nationals received minor-league outfielder Erik Komatsu in exchange.

Hairston is in the middle of one of his biannual productive on-base spurts, hitting .268/.342/.385 in 213 at-bats this season. He can play every position on the diamond except for catcher and pitcher, though he's seen most of his time this year at third base because of Ryan Zimmerman's injury.

Komatsu was an eighth-round pick in 2008 for the Brewers, and he’s been a solid lead-off option for every one of his minor-league teams, though as a 23-year-old in AA, he’s a little old for his league. He’s a career .310/.398/.449 hitter over four minor-league seasons, and he’s split his time between right and center this year.

Hairston's brother, Scott Hairston, is also expected to move before the deadline, by the New York Mets. Chico Hairston and Gummo Hairston could also be traded in minor deals, while Zeppo Hairston will likely stay put.
