Howie Roseman, the GM behind Philadelphia’s stellar offseason

When the Philadelphia Eagles promoted Howie Roseman to general manager in January of 2010, he said the proof would be in the pudding.

Eagles fans should be asking Roseman what flavor he likes. In a whirlwind 56-hour span, the Eagles signed DE Jason Babin, traded Kevin Kolb for CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a second-round pick, signed QB Vince Young, CB Nnamdi Asomugha, DT Cullen Jenkins and traded DT Brodrick Bunkley for a fifth-round pick.

In regards to the NFL Draft, Roseman has loaded Philadelphia with an extra pick in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth rounds in 2012.

Unquestionably, Roseman and the Eagles have won the calamitous offseason. But who is the 36-year-old rising front office star?

Although Eagles head coach Andy Reid ultimately has final say in football matters, Roseman seems to have a bigger role than former general manager Tom Heckert.

The proof is how Roseman has been able to work deals this offseason with big-name players but keep the Eagles out of salary cap trouble.

Knowing the cap is Roseman’s specialty. He came to the Eagles more than a decade ago as a salary cap specialist. Over the years, he progressed through the ranks as director of football administration, vice president of football administration and vice president of player personnel before getting his current position.

Unlike many NFL personnel men, Roseman doesn’t have a football background. He’s a law man, getting a degree from Fordham. It’s clear, though, that he knows how to run a front office.

He also knows the Eagles’ system and how to adapt inside it. Reid expressed as much during Roseman’s introductory press conference.

“I love Howie’s energy and I’ve loved it since I’ve been here with Howie,” Reid said, “His eagerness to grow in the profession. You’ve seen how we’ve done it on the coaching side; you’ve seen how we’ve done it on the player personnel side of it. His eagerness to learn and then his ability to evaluate are second to none. Then you can add in that Howie mentioned here about being a cap expert and all of those things. That’s just icing on the cake from that side of it. His effort and energy, I think you will find out over time here that it is second to none.”
