Justin Verlander just had his no-hitter bid against the Angels broken up by Maicer Izturis in the top of the eighth. However, it was intact to start off, when Erick Aybar pulled this stunt on the first pitch of the inning:
Erick Aybar Cares Not For Your Unwritten Rules
Aybar reached on what was called an E-1, keeping the no-hitter alive. But the result is less important than the act. One remembers Diamondbacks manager Bob Brenly calling Padres catcher Ben Davis “chickenshit” for bunting to break up a Curt Schilling perfect game many many years ago.
Was Aybar actually wrong to bunt? Do the unwritten rules matter for a hill of beans? That’s up to each individual to decide. I, personally, think it’s awesome and hilarious, but one can see why Tigers fans and players might be a wee bit steamed.
