Jaguars Release DE Derrick Harvey, G Vince Manuwai

According to Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com, the Jacksonville Jaguars have released former first-round defensive end Derrick Harvey.

Signed to a five-year, $33.4 million contract that included $17.5 million guaranteed, Harvey started 32 of 47 games over the last three seasons, recording just eight quarterback sacks. Harvey’s production fell well short of the double-digit sack totals that were expected of him when the Jaguars moved up 18 spots in the first round to draft him.

In addition to the big contract, the Jaguars traded their 2008 first-round pick, a pair of 2008 third-round picks, and a 2008 fourth-round pick to the Baltimore Ravens to move up to the eighth overall pick in order to select Harvey. The Ravens used two of those picks (No. 26 and No. 89) to trade up to select Delaware quarterback Joe Flacco with the 18th overall pick. The 71st overall pick was used on inside linebacker Tavares Gooden, while the latest of the picks, 125th overall, was traded to the Oakland Raiders for cornerback Fabian Washington.

Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times-Union reports that the Jaguars have also released veteran guard Vince Manuwai, who had opened training camp on the team's "Non-Football Injury" list. Manuwai had started 105 games for the Jaguars over the last eight seasons, and was due $2.9 million in base salary and a $500,000 roster bonus in 2011, the final year of his latest contract.
