Rookie Depth Chart Battles: Terrell McClain

More and more NFL rookies are expected to contribute early in their careers. However, for them to make an impact they need to beat out a veteran player. We are going to analyze the situation of specific rookies and determine the likely hood of them winning a position battle.

Player: Terrell McClain

Team: Carolina Panthers

Position: Defensive Tackle

Competition: Sione Fua, Nick Hayden, Ed Johnson, Derek Landri

Chance of winning the battle: 70 percent

Thoughts: The new coaching staff in Carolina means that every player starts with a fresh start. This benefits rookies because cuts into some of the advantage vets have in a specific system. The defensive tackle position in Carolina is great situation for a talented rookie because the current roster doesn’t feature any sure fire starters.

Terrell McClain possesses a good first step and snap awareness that allows him to penetrate the pocket. He also has a nice thick lower half that helps him anchor against the run. He likely projects as a 3 technique but has the versatility to rotate to the nose tackle spot. His overall talent and potential makes him an early favorite to earn signifitant playing time.

His competition really struggled to create pressure registering only a combined 4 sacks. The defense also gave up nearly 2000 rushing yards which made it tough for the unit to be successful. This is a unit that needs an infusion of talent which means McClain will be counted on to contribute.
