Chelsea have released a statement confirming that Michael Essien has suffered an injury to his right knee during training but have stated that no comment on its severity will be made until the results of tests being performed this weekend are known. Early rumors were that Essien tore a cruciate ligament and would miss most if not all of the upcoming season, but those reports are unconfirmed.
Chelsea Midfideler Michael Essien Suffers Knee Injury; Extent Of Damage To Be Made Public After Tests
Essien has previously missed large portions of two seasons after suffering knee injuries on international duty, first suffering damage to the ACL in his right knee in September of 2008 and then tearing the MCL in his left knee in January of 2010. The second injury caused him to miss not only the second half of Chelsea’s season but his spot on the Ghana team for last summer’s World Cup as well.
It is not yet publicly known which ligament Essien damaged, but if it is a re-injury of the ACL his recovery time may well be lengthened. Essien’s absence will likely give Ramires an opportunity to earn a regular place in Chelsea’s first XI and if the 28-year-old is forced to miss significant time, expect the Blues to ramp up their efforts to sign Luka Modric or Javier Pastore.
