New York Cosmos Could Play In Temporary Venue When They Join Major League Soccer

The seemingly never-ending history of the New York Cosmos and their hope for a venue in New York City continues to linger on. But some new developments could help push them into Major League Soccer as the league’s 20th club just like the everyone expects them to.

Cosmos vice-chairman Terry Byrne spoke recently to The Daily Mail about the hunt for a venue in New York City and let it out that the Cosmos and the league have been discussing all the options.

‘Our biggest asset is New York City,’ said Byrne. ‘We intend to capitalise on that.

‘We are working with the city on four solutions, looking at the transport and what the best environment to have the stadium in.

‘Discussions with the league are ongoing over the potential for a temporary solution as a two or three year stop-gap.

Getting a temporary venue to start out in MLS wouldn't be a first for an expansion club. We've seen plenty of clubs over the years play in temporary venues over the year like the Vancouver Whitecaps this season in Empire Field. Other teams have played in temporary venues over the years as well. Sporting Kansas City played at Community America Ballpark before moving into LIVESTRONG Sporting Park this year. The Houston Dynamo have been playing at Robertson Stadium since moving to Houston, they'll open a new stadium next year. The San Jose Earthquakes, who play their home matches at Buck Shaw Stadium are still waiting on their own park to be built in the near future.

Hearing that the two sides are discussing a two or three year deal at a non-soccer specific stadium to start out shows how badly the league wants to be in New York for the 20th team.
