On Tuesday, former Tiger Woods and current Adam Scott caddie Steve Williams kind of, sort of apologized for his words last Sunday. In a television interview following Scott’s victory at the 2011 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, Williams took some thinly-veiled shots at Woods and seemed to take more credit for the win than he gave to Scott. He apologized for the digs at Tiger, though what most people were actually waiting for was an apology about the latter issue. Williams has finally issued that apology.
Steve Williams Apologizes For Comments: ‘My Emotions Got The Better Of Me’
From his website KiwiCaddy.co.nz, Williams issued this statement apologizing for his conduct at the tournament:
“There has been considerable debate following the comments I made at the conclusion of Sunday’s Bridgestone Invitational. It was a complete surprise to have CBS announcer, David Feherty ask for an interview following the completion of play. My emotions following Adam’s victory were running very high and at the time I felt like my emotions poured out and got the better of me. I apologize to my fellow caddies and professionals for failing to mention Adam’s outstanding performance. I would like to thank all those fans at Firestone who made this victory the most special of my career.”
Williams and Scott are currently in Atlanta, Georgia, where the latter will be playing and the former will be caddying in the 2011 PGA Championship at the Atlanta Athletic Club. Scott, thanks to his big win at Firestone Country Club and his new top-10 ranking in the world, is one of the favorites to win the tournament.
