Rogers Cup WTA Toronto: Defending Champion Caroline Wozniacki Upset By Roberta Vinci

A day after two-time defending champion Andy Murray was bounced from the men’s tournament in Montreal, Caroline Wozniacki, the 2010 women’s champion at the Rogers Cup, was taken out in straight sets in Toronto, losing 6-4, 7-5 to Robera Vinci in the second round. Wozniacki had received a bye in the first round.

It was her first match on outdoor hard courts since Miami, and also her first since retiring with a shoulder injury at a tournament in Bastad, Sweden with a right shoulder injury.
It’s a bad loss for Wozniacki by any measure, but Roberta Vinci has quietly built up a very nice 2011, winning titles in Barcelona, ‘s-Hertogenbosch, and Budapest. Vinci faces Ana Ivanovic in the third round, after the streaky Serb beat Iveta Benesova in her second round match.

Especially with Kim Clijsters’ recent injury woes, Wozniacki’s hold on the No. 1 ranking should remain completely safe through until after the US Open regardless of Wozniacki’s performance,, which will likely only cause the criticism of her hold on the ranking grow louder.
