Howard Schnellenberger, the only football coach in Florida Atlantic Owls history, will retire at the end of the 2011 season, he announced Thursday after reports. He said he plans to stick around and support the university's athletic programs while transitioning off the sideline.
Howard Schnellenberger Retiring After 2011, Remaining Part Of FAU Athletics
Here’s Schellenberger:
After looking at the situation, Beverlee and I are delighted that the University has welcomed our decision to leave the coaching ranks following the 2011 season. We will continue our relationship with the University in the most pronounced way. I feel this will be the most seamless and best way to formulate a transition from coaching to an ambassador for the University.
The fashionable gentleman insisted his retirement decision won’t affect FAU’s 2011 goals: to win the Sun Belt, “followed by the appropriate bowl appearance.” Only what’s appropriate, after all.
Talk will turn to coaching replacements, the first such hire FAU football has ever had to make.
