When in doubt, close Wayne Rooney down. More accurately, always close Wayne Rooney down. Ben Foster is still waiting for his defense to close down the Manchester United hitman so it is no surprise that the goalkeeper was found picking the ball out of his own net. The Red Devils have begun their title defense with a goal by Rooney, a fitting start to what they hope will be a second consecutive English Premier League title.
West Brom Vs. Manchester United: Wayne Rooney Scores To Put Red Devils On Top
The goal came in the 13th minute as Rooney and Ashley Young combined to unlock a porous West Brom defense. Rooney spotted Young wide on the left and opened up the play by getting the ball to United's new signing. The winger may have been offside as replays proved inconclusive, but the flag stayed down. Young carried the ball down the left before giving it back to Rooney at the edge of the box, where the striker took a couple touches to settle. With Gabriel Tamas inexplicably refusing to close down space, Rooney was able to turn and hit the ball with his left foot low and to the far post for the first goal of the match.
