Serena Williams Wins Biggest Title Of Comeback Thus Far, Defeats Samantha Stosur In Rogers Cup Final

Serena Williams won the second and biggest title of her career at the Rogers Cup in Toronto Sunday, defeating No. 10 seed Samantha Stosur 6-4, 6-2 in the final. The title is the 39th of Serena’s storied career.

After an extremely competitive first set, Serena blasted her way through Stosur in the second set, breaking Stosur in the first and fifth games of the set to take control. Stepping into the court to cut off the Stosur serve, Serena neutralized her opponent’s biggest weapon effectively, and only faced one break point on her own serve in the entire match.

Serena closed out the tournament with an ace, threw her arms up in the air and jumped around a few times. She was happy.

Storming through the second with the speed and determination that Serena showed was necessitated by the ominous weather that hung overhead. A loud clap of thunder boomed overhead early in the second set, and rain began to fall as the trophy ceremony got underway after the match.

The title cements Serena’s place as the favorite going into the US Open, which starts in just over two weeks.
