Novak Djokovic Wins Record Fifth Masters/1000 Title Of Year With Win Over Mardy Fish In Rogers Cup Montreal Final

Novak Djokovic’s absurdly good 2011 keeps getting better.

With his 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win over Mardy Fish in the finals of the Rogers Cup in Montreal, Djokovic improved his record on the year to 53-1.

Djokovic, who won his first Masters/1000 title in Montreal four years ago, got his strongest test since losing at the French Open to Roger Federer from Fish, but ultimately used his big match experience and incredible speed to undo the top-ranked American.

Djokovic did blink at the finish. With triple championship point at 40-0, some tight (though occasionally forced) errors brought Fish to deuce. But Djokovic got himself back to championship point one point later, and closed it out with an unreturnable serve.

With his run to the final (his fourth career appearance in a Masters/1000 final), Fish improves to No. 7 in the ATP rankings, his career high.

With 2011 titles in Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid, Rome, and now Montreal, Djokovic becomes the first ever player to record five Masters/1000 title in one year. Djokovic also becomes the first player to win five consecutive Masters/1000 titles.

He could make it six in Cincinnati next Sunday.
