Borussia Mönchengladbach Vs. Wolfsburg: Full Time, Felix Magath’s Side Slaughtered 4-1

With the experienced Felix Magath re-joining Wolfsburg at the end of last season, many fans thought that he would be able to return the team to the top half of the table this season. If this result is any indication, he'll be lucky to keep them out of the drop zone. Thanks to a brilliant performance by Marco Reus, a shocking performance by Simon Kjaer, and an all-around superb gameplan from the perennially underrated Lucien Favre, Gladbach cruised to a crushing 4-1 home victory on Friday night.

Makoto Hasebe scored the opener for Wolfsburg 12 minutes into the match, getting them off to a fantastic start, but that would be about the last positive thing that happened for the visitors on the night. Reus answered in the 15th minute and it was all downhill from their for Wolfsburg. Reus drew a penalty in the 32nd minute, converted by Filip Daems, and Raul Bobadilla piled on the misery just before halftime with Gladbach's third goal. Reus would complete his brace in the 67th minute, capping off a brilliant performance.

Wolfsburg had very little in the way of chances, but Marc-Andre ter Steegen was forced into a couple of difficult saves, which he made well. All in all, Gladbach probably created four times more scoring opportunities than their opponents while keeping possession for two-thirds of the match, absolutely dominating Wolfsburg from Reus’s equalizer to the final whistle. Simon Kjaer, Wolfsburg’s highly touted central defender, was absolutely shocking while the seemingly talented midfield in front of him did nothing to make his job easier.

Die Wölfe have much more talent than they showed on Friday night, and their performance was as unexpected as it was abysmal. A team this talented with a manager as experienced as Magath shouldn’t have another shocker like this, but based on Wolfsburg’s struggles last year and Schalke’s struggles under Magath in the same timeframe, you never know.
