In contrast to our standard collective image of Babe Ruth, here he is in a wire photo dusting up a ground triple ahead of a tag by the Giants’ Heinie Groh in the fifth inning of Game 1 of the 1923 World Series as umpire Bob Hart looks on. When the next batter popped out to the second baseman, Ruth tried to lam it home and was thrown out. Although this wasn’t the Babe’s worst Series base running blunder, the Yankees did lose this game by one run.
