The NFL Supplemental Draft went gloriously as expected. The Oakland Raiders used a third-round pick on former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor.
Oakland Raiders take Terrelle Pryor in supplemental draft
The Raiders, who didn’t have a fourth-round pick, chose to take Pryor with the 18th pick in the third round.
This should come as no surprise – and not for the obvious Oakland Raiders/Al Davis jokes. It’s been well-documented that the Raiders coveted quarterback Colin Kaepernick in the 2011 NFL Draft, but couldn’t maneuver around enough to get him before the San Francisco 49ers selected him 36th overall.
Pryor profiles similarly to Kaepernick in that both are big, angular signal callers with strong arms, athleticism and questionable mechanics. The biggest difference between the two seems to be character and work ethic. By all accounts, Pryor lacks both and has thus far gotten by on his immense natural ability.
The Raiders are now without picks in the second, third and fourth rounds of the 2012 NFL Draft. They should, however, receive some compensatory picks. At least a third is reason expectation after losing cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha in free agency to the Philadelphia Eagles.
In Oakland, Pryor will compete with fellow quarterbacks Kyle Boller, Jason Campbell and Trent Edwards. Suffice to say, Pryor stands a good chance of making the team’s roster.
According to John Clayton of ESPN,Pryor is expected to get a four-year, $2.36 million deal including $591,000 to sign. That’s good for Pryor who is expected to lose some of his first-year money while serving a five-game suspension.
