First word: This year's quarterback class looks to have some really promising prospects. Of course, Andrew Luck is the cream of the crop but others have emerged as real top notch prospects. Year in and year out, the quarterback position proves to be the most important position on the field.
Ryan Tannehill 2012 NFL Draft prospect notes
Ryan Tannehill enjoyed a nice season after taking over as the starter in the middle of the season. Tannehill started off 5-0 while leading the Aggies to a bowl game. He was able to operate the A&M offense while getting the ball into the hands of this playmakers. Tannehill is a decent athlete and made several plays with his feet. Texas A&M likes to roll him out of the pocket. At times, he shows the ability to accurately deliver the football. He does a nice job anticipating his throws and getting the ball out before his target breaks.
Throughout the season it showed that Tannehill was not the original starter and only had limited playing time. The most obvious was his erratic play and poor decisions. For the most part, Tannehill took care of the football but at times he really struggled to avoid the turnover. A lot of the turnovers came because of his tendency to stare down his primary target and struggles going through progressions. He doesn’t boast a strong enough arm to tip off his passes which is why he needs to improve his ability to go across the field. Tannehill doesn’t have a great arm and I would classify it as average. His football doesn’t have a lot of zip and he under throws the long ball. He really struggled to push the ball down the field rarely taking a chance and when he did it was inaccurate.
Tannehill will be a good college quarterback and help Texas A&M win football games. However, he appears to have limited potential as an NFL quarterback. He needs to show a lot of improvement in his ability to go through progressions and read defenses. His arm strength won’t change much so he needs to work on the mental part of the game.
Bold statement: Tannenhill will be at best a mid round prospect

- Tannehill has nice size and decent bulk for the position
- He will have no problem seeing over his offensive linemen
- His athletic ability allows him to escape the pocket and pick up yards with his feet
- Texas A&M often calls designed quarterback runs
- Tannehill doesn’t have great arm strength and at best has an average NFL arm
- His throws lack the appropriate zip and tend to float towards the target
- However, what he lacks in arm strength he makes up for with throw anticipation
- He is able to release the ball as his target breaks Tannehill really struggles throwing the deep ball I would categorize him as a game manager He has decent mechanics and does a good job setting his feet towards his target
- However, he has a long delivery kind of like a sling shot motion
- Tannehill has inconsistent accuracy which worsens the further he goes down the field
- He likes to lock onto his main target and rarely goes through his progressions
