In the top of the 7th inning, the overheated rivalry between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox came to a head, as John Lackey hit Francisco Cervelli with a pitch. This caused both teams to come out on the field and say angry things to each other.
Yankees, Red Sox Fight
While details are unclear as to exactly what was said, there’s a good chance that there was a “Hey, c’mon!” mixed in there somewhere, as was a “That’s a bunch of bull.” An old guy wearing a Yankees uniform, possibly a coach or Jorge Posada, was thrown out for saying especially nasty things to an umpire, who wasn’t even really involved.
The fracas started after Jacoby Ellsbury and Robinson Cano stuck their elbows out at pitches and got hit, which for some reason forced Lackey to hit a backup catcher on the other team. The coordinated, vicious attack caused the both teams to finally do what the rivalry has been building towards for the past hundred years. Finally, the two teams stood on the field and said angry things to each other.
Now that the two teams have closure, the rivalry is over. Baseball can start to rebuild and learn from the animosity.
