Red Sox Vs. Yankees: CC Sabathia Strong In 5-2 New York Win

C.C. Sabathia gave up two runs over six innings, Eric Chavez knocked in two RBIs and the New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox 5-2 in a game that ended exactly one minute under the four hour mark.

With the win Sabathia inches closer to yet another 20-win season, improving his already sterling record to 18-7. Though it wasn’t easy tonight, as the Red Sox continually connected off the left-hander, collecting ten hits but leaving every man on base with the exception of a brief two-run rally in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Francisco Cervelli and Derek Jeter tacked on runs in the fifth and seventh to give the Yankees a three-run cushion, and Mariano Rivera pitched an efficient ninth to secure the win. It was the 41-year-old's 35th save of the year.

Red Sox right-hander John Lackey picked up his first loss to New York in three starts this season, dropping his total record to 12-10 after giving up five runs and seven hits over seven innings.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi and pitching coach Larry Rothschild were ejected from the game in the ninth and seventh inning respectively, for arguing with third base umpire Mark Wegner.

The two rival clubs resume action Wednesday night at Fenway Park with second game of the three-game series. Phil Hughes (4-4, 6.46 ERA) is scheduled to match up against Josh Beckett (11-5, 2.43 ERA). First pitch is at 7:00 p.m. ET.
