Oscar De La Hoya Admits Suicidal Thoughts, Continues Rehab

Oscar De La Hoya has been in since May due to substance abuse problems. Unfortunately, the boxing legend is apparently also dealing with issues related to suicidal thoughts as well.

De La Hoya admitted to having thought about suicide in an interview with Spanish-language network Univision that aired Tuesday night, according to a report from the Associated Press. In more positive news, De La Hoya said he has been sober for three months after hitting rock bottom within the past two years.

De La Hoya, currently transitioning into the other side of boxing in his work as a promoter under the banner Golden Boy Promotions, also touched on his bouts with infidelity and alcohol addiction in the interview.

Scott Christ from SB Nation’s Bad Left Hook transcribed a few of the key quotes from the boxer during the five-minute interview.

De La Hoya: “I don’t consider myself a sex addict. I’ve been unfaithful to my wife. We’re obviously not talking a Tiger Woods here, but I was unfaithful. It was filling the void of maybe not feeling loved to a certain point. It was filling the void of maybe not having, um -- not feeling safe.”

The boxer also talked about how he’s been able to overcome his addiction to alcohol.

Oscar: “I have tools, I understand how this disease works. I’m fed up with the lies. I’m fed up with -- working to be an alcoholic, it’s a 24/7 job. And I just got tired of it. I wanted this for myself. A clean, sober life. It’s much better.”

Hopefully this is the last time De La Hoya makes the news for this sort of thing considering the solid work he’s been able to accomplish as a boxing promoter.
