VIDEO: Dae-Sung Koo, The Mets’ Hero In A Starter Jacket

Last night I was pulling up Jeff Sullivan’s feature from earlier this month, “Santiago Casilla And The Worst Plate Appearance In Baseball History,“ because it really is the sort of thing that should be read once a week. Well, in the comments section, Amazin’ Avenue’s Steve Schreiber dredged up video of a Mets game from 2005.

It’s six years old. It’s possible that you have already seen it. I’m sharing it with you now because I hadn’t seen it, and because it’s instantly one of my favorite videos in the history of baseball videos:

Meet Dae-Sung Koo. In 2005, his only season in the major leagues, Koo made 33 appearance, most of them as a middle reliever.

He made two plate appearances in his entire career. Here is one of them.

I want to snicker at Tim McCarver for being as wrong as possible; on the other hand, this is an event so magical, so purely pleasant, that even McCarver and Joe Buck are along for the ride. They’re actually excited.

So there was Koo, standing on second. He wasn’t finished.

As someone who has watched tons of National League baseball, I enjoy watching pitchers bat. I really enjoy watching them make base-running decisions, and I’m a HUGE enthusiast of pitchers running the bases while wearing their Starter jackets. This is the best damn thing ever of all time, is what I’m saying.

Koo never batted in the majors again. He holds a .500 career batting average and a 1.500 career OPS. I am in love.
