Braves Add Utility Infielder Jack Wilson

The same day they traded for extra outfielder Matt Diaz, the postseason-bound Atlanta Braves have traded for extra infielder Jack Wilson. From an official press release:

Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik announce tonight that the Mariners have traded infielder Jack Wilson to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for a player to be named later.

There's nothing real complicated about this. The Braves have every-day players at shortstop (Alex Gonzalez) and second base (Dan Uggla), but utility infielder Julio Lugo can't really hit or field or run. When healthy -- at the moment, he's on the Disabled List with a bruised heel -- Jack Wilson can do at least one of those things. For all their virtues, the Braves are not blessed with good infield defense, and Wilson's glove might save a run or two in October.

For the Mariners’ part, they might save a few thousand bucks and they’ve definitely opened a space on the 40-man roster, always a plus as the calendar turns to September.
