Jacoby Ellsbury’s Walkoff Blast Lifts Sox Over Indians

Jacoby Ellsbury’s solo homer off Joe Smith in the ninth inning Wednesday was his second consecutive walk-off hit.

Jacoby Ellsbury had his second consecutive game-winning hit for the Boston Red Sox, as his homer with two outs in the ninth inning led the Sox to a 4-3 victory over the Cleveland Indians and helped them maintain a one-game lead on the New York Yankees in the A.L. East.

David Ortiz hit a two-run single against Carlos Carrasco in the first inning, but the Indians tied the game 2-2 in the fourth, on Jason Kipnis's solo homer and Travis Hafner's run-scoring double.

Marco Scutaro grounded into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning to help the Sox retake the lead. But Ezequiel Carrera tied it in the seventh with an automatic double near the right-field foul pole, driving in Lonnie Chisenhall and knocking Sox starter Tim Wakefield -- going for his 200th career win -- out of the game.

Joe Smith came on to pitch the ninth for the Indians and got two ground-outs, but he threw a fastball over the heart of the plate to Ellsbury, who crushed it over the center-field wall and ended the game.

Ellsbury also had a walk-off RBI single against the Indians on Tuesday.

With the Tigers' win over the Rangers, the Indians dropped to four games out of first place in the A.L. Central.
