Though Chivas Guadalajara and Pumas UNAM weren’t able to create any goals over their 90 minute encounter, their match did not suffer from a lack of scoring chances or a lack of entertainment value. Instead, both teams’ defenses and central midfield players were absolutely brilliant, coming up with fantastic last ditch tackles, clearances and blocked shots all game long. Both teams might feel slightly unsatisfied with a 0-0 draw, but both will also be able to walk away with their heads held high, knowing they played mistake free football.

Both the Jonny Magallon-Hector Reynoso-Patricio Araujo and Marco Antonio Palacios-Dario Veron-David Cabrera units in the midfield and defense for Pumas and Chivas were brilliant, completely controlling the match. Marco Fabian and Martin Bravo worked hard to create chances for their respective teams, but the defenses were too dominant. Additionally, both sets of central defenders are extremely technically adept, so they were able to control the tempo and possession just as well as they were able to break up scoring chances.
Pumas and Chivas will almost certainly be title contenders at the end of the year, and it’s down to their tactically and technically adept defenses, who were on full display with fantastic performances on Saturday evening.
