In a pure stroke of overreaction here, Carolina Panthers rookie quarterback Cam Newton looks legit.
In loss, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton looks legit
The No. 1 overall pick in this year's NFL Draft destroyed the rookie first game passing yards record in a 28-21 loss to the Arizona Cardinals Sunday.
Newton passed for 422 yards in his debut, breaking Peyton Manning's previous record of 302 yards. As Doug Farrar of Yahoo! Sports points out, Newton tied Matthew Stafford for most yards thrown in a game by a rookie.
On the game, Newton completed 24 of 37 passes (64.8 percent) and connected on two touchdowns. Newton also ran for a touchdown against the Cardinals. Eleven of Newton's completions went to tight ends Greg Olsen and Jeremy Shockey, which is no surprise. At one point, Newton completed seven consecutive passes.
As Farrar pointed out, several of his throws were impressively on out routes. In fact, his ball placement throughout the game precise until Arizona started to put on more pressure in the second half.
If Carolina can cobble together a better offensive line, the fun for Newton has just begun.
Perhaps more impressive than the record, Newton also did this (thanks, @bubbaprog):
